JIM MABIE 1935-2021

Chicago Capital is saddened by the passing of our founder and Chairman, Jim Mabie. Jim began his investment career at AG Becker, joining his father, Bill, and brother John. He brought his talent to William Blair in 1983, where he was joined by son, David. In 2018, Jim decided it was time for a new project and started Chi-Cap. When asked by his peers why he would launch a start-up at age 82, Jim would simply reply "You would love it, it's never too late".

Jim loved Chicago and was active in many organizations. Together with his wife and partner, Kay, he contributed his time and effort to a number of groups in the city, including Chicago Symphony Orchestra (Finance Committee Chair), Lyric Opera of Chicago (Finance Committee Chair), Thresholds (Chair), WBEZ Radio (Chair), WTTW Television (Chair), and many others. A contribution he was most proud of was co-founding the Chicago High School for the Arts, better known as ChiArts (founding Chair). Created to address the issue of diversity and representation in the Chicago arts community, ChiArts was born as a public institution that would provide a comprehensive learning environment with superior arts training at the high school level for aspiring young artists.

Jim's energy and devotion are at the core of Chi-Cap. He was more than our founder, he was our inspiration.
